Since synthesis of Acetyl-CoA from pyruvate is irreversible, it is crucial that the reaction be carefully controlled. One possible fate of the pyruvate when this reaction is inhibited, is its conversion, by gluconeogenesis, into glucose-6-P that can be stored as glycogen. Thereby, this first gluconeogenesis reaction must be stimulated.
